Global Warming-Real or Just a Bunch of Hype Free Online Research Papers Over the past several years, the media has literally bombarded the public with a plethora of information pertaining to the implications that the greenhouse effect will lead to global warming. Alan Caruba explains that it is because of the media’s goal to capture a sizeable audience that these predictions are constantly in the news (58). Some people are convinced that global warming is a serious issue, while others view the information as a bunch of hype and see no reason to be concerned. The evidence presented can be looked at in different ways, and often is, when viewed by different scientists. While Robert C. Balling Jr. admits that the global temperature has increased over the last 25 years, he states that former Vice-President Al Gore and some scientists have overstated the figures (46). On the other hand, Darren Goetze warns that global warming does, in fact, exist and is a real threat to human life, as well as, plants and animals (26). It is because of these conflicting theories that we need to examine the evidence so that we can come to some sort of conclusion and see what, if anything, can be done to preserve our earth. Recent Atmospheric Changes For thousands of years, the atmosphere has gone through many stages of warming and cooling. The process has been so slow to progress in the past that plant and animal life have had time to adjust to the changes. Geoffrey Saign warns that â€Å"if the current predictions of increased global warming are accurate, the earth’s average temperature would rise higher than it has in the past 125,000 years† (149). Mark Bush has stated that one statistic about hot and cold seasons in not enough proof that global warming is actually taking place, but he also concedes that the 10 highest recorded temperatures have occurred between the years 1980 1995 (320). The above graph shows the record of global average temperatures that has been compiled by the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research of the United Kingdom Meteorological Office. Could the climate’s natural variability be the only cause of these changes? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change doesn’t think so. Their Second Assessment Report provides evidence that heat-trapping human activities- such as carbon dioxide from burning coal, oil, and gas- are in part driving global warming by increasing the amount of the sun’s heat trapped in the earth’s atmosphere. This extra heat is making the global climate system unstable. The Intergovernmental Panel concluded that the rise in temperature and change in climate are â€Å"unlikely to be entirely natural in origin† and that â€Å"the balance of evidence suggests a discernible human influence on global climate†. (Goetze 26) The Greenhouse Effect Human Activity The greenhouse effect is a natural process that occurs when heat from the sun is reflected off the earth’s surface and then held in the atmosphere, instead of escaping into space. Bush explains how this works; The greenhouse effect is thought to be increased as concentrations of water vapor and carbon dioxide rise or to be lessened as they decline. As air warms, its capacity to hold water vapor increases. If atmospheric pollution causes air temperatures to rise, the water-holding capacity of the air will increase, and it is this additional water vapor that would be the primary greenhouse gas of global warming (Bush 321). When there are more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, then more heat gets trapped in the air around the planet. Saign fears that â€Å"humans are influencing the temperature of the planet by releasing large amounts of greenhouse gases† (156). The U.S. Congress states that the impacts on greenhouse gases due to human activity include the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, fertilizing croplands, and heating, air-conditioning, and lighting buildings (3). Some of the gases that are responsible for warming the Earth are; chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxide. Carbon dioxide is the major greenhouse gas and an emission of this gas is added to the atmosphere by burning gasoline in cars, trucks, airplanes, deforestation. Methane is second in line of importance and is derived from such things as; rice paddies, bovine flatulence, bacteria in bogs (ecobridge). Effects of Global Warming Geoffrey Saign warns people to expect changes to take place due to the effects of global warming. Some of the changes would include; more erratic and unpredictable weather patterns, a melting of polar ice would cause the sea levels to rise, because of increased heat, more moisture would be in the air and this would cause some areas of the world to experience more rain and flooding while other areas would experience major periods of drought, a loss of biodiversity would make the natural ecosystems highly unstable (150). According to Goetze, â€Å"a rise of 6 to 37 inches in sea level with persistent flooding endangering coastal wetlands and human settlements† (27) is a major possibility as well as, a greater chance of more human diseases in tropical areas. Changing For a Better Earth Saign suggests several things people can do to help preserve our Earth. Practice energy conservation Drive less, buy fuel-efficient vehicles, more use of mass transit Recycle use recycled products Check into solar and wind energy systems for your home Plant more trees in your yard Ask your legislators to call for the U.S. to lead the world in required lessening of carbon dioxide emissions â€Å"If we wait for absolute proof that global warming is a serious problem that humans are causing, and it does occur, it may be too late to reverse the trend† (Saign 150). There are many different solutions, that have been identified by scientists and economists, which are technically feasible and cost-effective if we are serious about reducing emissions in an effort to take care of our planet. By investing in new vehicle technologies, renewable energy sources, and cutting oil and coal subsidies, we would not only help preserve the Earth but, we would have the added benefit of cutting down on air pollution and creating more jobs in the field of technology. As long as there are individuals with their own opinions living on this Earth, we will continue to hear conflicting viewpoints about whether global warming is real or just a bunch of hype. What we cannot ignore is the fact that the temperatures have been getting warmer every summer and the weather patterns have become very erratic. Whether we are convinced or not that this highly controversial issue is actually taking place, preserving our planet is something that everyone should be concerned with, if not for ourselves, for the future generations to come. Friedrich Froebel and Marie Clay Friedrich August Wilhelm Froebel was born in Oberweissback, Germany in April 21, 1782 (Ransbury, 1995). He was the sixth child of a Lutheran Minister, but lost his mother before his first birthday. As a young boy, he played and explored in the gardens surrounding his home most of the time. His deep love of nature would later influence his educational philosophy. He did not become educated until age eleven. When he was fifteen years old, he was apprenticed to a Forester. He then studied at the University of Jena. He accepted a teaching position at the Frankfurt Model School in Yverdon, Switzerland. This school was based on the teachings of Johann Heirnrich Pestalozzi. Froebel embraced Pestalozzi’s philosophy that children need to be active learners. He left the school to be a private tutor where the children’s parents offered him a small patch of the property to use as a garden. The learning experiences that the children had there made Froebel realize that â€Å"ac tion and direct observation were the best ways to educate† (â€Å"Friedrich Froebel,† 2000). Froebel continued his education at the Universities of Berlin and Gottingen. In 1813 he served in the Prussian Army against Napoleon. His invention of Gifts might have been shaped while he was an assistant in the Mineralogical Museum in Berlin. His first book, The Education of Man, was published in 1826. Jonathans Swifts’ Gulliver’s Travels Essay

In Joanthans Swifts’ Gulliver’s Travels Part IV he uses a certain character to be his perfect example for what the human race should be. With this character he then will compare to the lowest of all beings to illustrate all the faults of man. These characters in his story are called the Houyhnhnms, which have a uniquely similar pronunciation to the word humans, and the Yahoos, who are the evil beasts of this particular island that Gulliver has washed up upon. Throughout the story as Gulliver describes the people of his home to the Houyhnhnms the reader begins to see how Swift shines a light on all the faults that humans have; compared to a divine, simple and perfect creature as the Houyhnhnms. Gulliver tries to distinct himself from the Yahoos of this land, who he absolutely abhors, by explaining his people’s ways and showing they have the ability to reason, unlike the Yahoos. The reader easily begins to see what Swift is trying to accomplish with his writings. He lets the reader make their own assumptions of the human race, but makes the assumption very clear. Within the story Gulliver describes how â€Å"his eyes had been opened and enlarged his understanding, which he began to view the actions and passions of man in a very different light†(puchner291). Gulliver begins to see that the thick skin, extra hair and long nails are merely the only thing separating himself from the Yahoos. This eye opening is exactly what Swift wants his readers to experience and see that there are so many despicable faults and useless ways of life in their society. The slow dissembling of the faults within man and questioning of the ways of mankind are in complete alignment with the ideas and ways of the Enlightenment, which was in short, to question everything. As Gulliver’s stay on the island continues, this questioning and examination of every aspect of his former life continues as well. The Houyhnhnms, or voices of reason, go on to question the laws of Gulliver’s land. One Houyhnhnms states how he cannot even contemplate how â€Å"the law which was intended for every man’s preservation should be any man’s ruin† (puchner285). Swift takes a deep stab at the governments’ ways of workings at the time and simply shows how it is anything but just and does not make any sense. Swift also makes a remarkable point in the direction of women’s rights, and uses common since to show how the treatment of women of the time was entirely reckless. The voice of a Houyhnhnms explains how it would be â€Å"monstrous in them to give the females a different kind of education from the males† (puchner298). The Houyhnhnms says how this way holds no logic, because it would leave one half of their people only useful for the bringing of children into the world and leave them good for nothing else (puchner298). Swift does not stop there and states how irresponsible it would be to not only leave this group inadequate but to then trust the care and upbringing of their children with these completely incompetent creatures. His reason here is very sound and unmistakable; how can you expect a society to flourish if the raising of man is done by the lowest creature of their society. Gulliver tries to prove to be different form the Yahoos by the fact that he can reason. The Houyhnhnms can see straight through this and one states that â€Å"when a creature pretending to reason could be capable of such enormities, he dreaded lest the corruption of that faculty might be worse than brutality itself† (puchner285). Through the Houyhnhnms response Swift dives into the depths of what humankind is capable of. He tackles how we may have the power of reason but have abused it to the full extent and instead of like the Yahoos caused destruction outwards on the world we have brought corruption into the inner beings of our society. Swift’s writings in Gulliver’s Travels question the entire makings of humankind and even the inability of people to dare to question. The Houyhnhnms are Swifts example of how humans should be but even the Houyhnhnms in their perfectness have a fault. They have no ability to question any facts or speak of â€Å"the thing which is not†. In Swift’s story, Gulliver recants how he remembers how hard it was for him to get his master to comprehend the meaning of the word opinion, or how any fact could be brought to question because â€Å"reason taught us to affirm or deny only where we are certain; and beyond our knowledge we cannot do either† (puchner297). Swift wants the reader to understand that you must not be afraid to put your thoughts and what you have been taught all of your life into question, to not fear the unknown. The Houyhnhnms refuse to believe that there are nations outside of their own island, similar to the way people refuse to think that there are opinions and answers other than their own that could be right. Swift uses his story Gulliver’s Travels to ignite the idea that the world as you know may not be the best of what it could be, just as the way stories have been used to teach children lessons at a young age. In Voltaire’s story Candide, his main character Candide is taken on a journey where he is determined to find his true love Cunegonde, which he is separated form in the beginning of the story. Through his journey Voltaire has Candide also in constant search for any man that is happier than he. In the story Candide has a friend named Pangloss who is a philosopher. In the beginning of this tale Pangloss states that â€Å"there cannot possibly be an effect without a cause† and that â€Å"things cannot be otherwise than they are, for since everything is made to serve an end, everything necessarily serves the best end† (puchner356). Voltaire takes these quotes throughout the story and commits Candide to question it at every chance, but is blinded by pure devotion to what his friend Pangloss has said and continues to push on. Voltaire uses the comparison of two opposites just as Jonathan Swift did in Gulliver Travel’s IV. Voltaire uses the land Eldorado in Candid e to compare to Westphalia. Eldorado is the example of the perfect world while Westphalia is full of everything that is wrong with the world in Voltaire’s opinion. In this sacred Eldorado Candide and Cacambo witnesses how the people have no desire or wants for the jewels that line their streets. He states that â€Å"the children of this land must be well trained, since they are taught contempt for gold and jewels† (puchner381). During their dinner with their host at the hotel Candide tries to use the gold for payment but in this perfect Eldorado people are courteous and hotels are made and paid for by the state and they do not need any money. Later Candide begins to ask about religion and finds that this land has the perfect religion where they do not have monks that dictate what they do and punish them if they do not practice their religion as they say they should (putchner383). Instead Voltaire describes a religion where people are all of the same mind and can freely practice their religion (puc hner282). Once Candide meets the king he finds that this perfect land has no parliament for there was no need and no prisons but they had a gallery full of places to study sciences with mathematical and physical instruments to help further knowledge (putchner383). Here you can see how Voltaire is creating a world that has no prejudices and is surrounded by the overall bettering and good of the people. Although Candide and Cacambo have found the perfect world they still are not satisfied. This is a major flaw in man, to continue to want even after they have everything they need. In response to this, Candide and Cacambo leave and take all the riches they need that they assume will bring them happiness but instead are presented with tragedy after tragedy that brings them right back to where they began. Candide then by losing everything somehow is reunited with all his friends and they make it to a tiny farm to live where Pangloss continues to question. He finds a philosopher that he wants to discuss the â€Å"effects and causes, the best of possible worlds, the origin of evil, the nature of the soul, and pre-established harmony† (putchner412) all of which are prime examples of some of the main parts that have been in question during the Enlightenment; but instead Pangloss has the door slammed in his face; similar to the way man refuses to discuss these very same aspect. Pangloss still does not stop asking questions and making philosophical assumptions even to the very end of the story and after all the terrible things that had happened to him. Candide then runs into a Turk that states that most of the time the people who get involved in others business, perish terribly (putchner413). The Turk then continues to tell Candide that he and his family cultivate their 20 acres â€Å"and the work keeps [them] from three great evils, boredom, vice, and poverty† (putchner413). Candide takes the Turks words very seriously and soon sets out his life to imitate the Turks and sets up a garden to cultivate. After meeting all the people throughout his journey he finds this man to be the only person happier than him and he had found a way to make life bearable; so Candide commits to doing the same. Voltaire has much to say through his character Pangloss and Martin, about men who choose to live their lives working. Pangloss states that â€Å"man was not born to take his ease† and Martin comments that â€Å"working without speculation is the only way of rendering life bearable.† Candide finally has everything that he wanted all on their farm but sees that what he wanted and thought is not anymore what he wants or thinks. Cunegonde has lost all her beauty and he does not love her anymore and Pangloss’s theory does not hold a light in Candid’s’ mind anymore. He decides to change his life and stop wanting more and make a life that is focused on one goal; to cultivate his garden and not worry about the trifles amongst the world. He then sees clearly that he makes his own happiness and others do not. The garden will keep him away from the evils in which he has met all his life. He will not have to want for food and beg, and he will only have enough for what he needs and not what he wants and this will keep his mind busy and away from boredom. Pope’s writings differ greatly from Swift’s or Voltaire’s. In Pope’s Essay on Man, he uses poetry to illustrate his philosophical points. The start of his essay states â€Å" what can we reason but from what we know†(putchner345). Pope gains the reader’s attention by simply saying that he is just going to examine Man. This alone is what the Enlightenment was about, to take into account all that you thought you knew and then ask yourself, is this really what I know. Pope goes to ask the question, are we the only system or universe? He says to just â€Å"observe how system into system runs†(putchner345). How can we be the only world is the question he wishes to ignite in us; if we just look at our world we can clearly see that we are too a system within a system and perhaps we have a purpose within this very sphere. He continues to ask question among question to further state, why are we the way we are? And are we the highest being above all on earth and if so, should we be in this place? We can see where he asks â€Å"if God has placed him wrong† and should we have the power over the world that we do (putchner345). If God has placed us in this high position then shouldn’t we be perfe ct, but he describes free will by saying that â€Å"man’s as perfect as he ought† and that we are as good as we let ourselves be (putchner346). The Essay on Man discusses fate and why we do not know our own fate or more then the very page that we are on in life. If â€Å"had he thy reason, would he skip and play† (putchner346) and continue to live our lives if we knew how it would all end. He gives the answer that hope of the unknown is what keeps man going. He examines the Indian people, a prime example of living in the unknown; for they had no sciences to let them see the planets and the universe but still remained to have God in their culture. He said they have a â€Å"humbler heaven† before the Europeans came to conquer their land and torment them for their gold (putchner347). Pope describes to the reader that pride is our error and we blame God for everything when we are not happy. Our pride gives us the right to think that earth is for our own use. He explains â€Å"why has not man a microscopic eye†, his response is simple â€Å"that man is not a fly† (putchner347). Pope wants the reader to see that God has made us the way we are and we are not meant to see that far; that we are meant to inspect the earth not to understand the heavens. He ends his essay by saying that â€Å"all partial evil [is] universal good† and that â€Å"whatever is, is right† (putchner351). This very statement was examined greatly by Voltaire’s work Candide and has been examined by many philosophers and thinkers even to this very present day. The Rape of the Lock is another story written by Pope in which he also uses poetry to reach the reader but in my case went over my head. He illustrates a beautiful story of a girl named Belinda that his great at playing cards and wins the heart of every man and Sylph she comes across. The Sylphs follow Belinda throughout her entire day and Pope begins to show how man has no control over anything that happens; whether that may be the folding of her sleeves or the safety of Belinda. Pope may be continuing his theory that man has his own fate but that he cannot know it and certain Powers that are out of our understand control our day to day life. That this is the way things are and it is in our best ability to be happy with the life we are given. Even the fair Belinda blessed with all the beauty in the world is not spared by fates hand. The loss of her strand of hair in the end may resemble the loss of virtue and her pride for even the perfect can be brought down. French and Indian War Siege of Fort William Henry

The Siege of Fort William Henry took place August 3-9, 1757, during the French Indian War (1754-1763). Though tensions between British and French forces on the frontier had been growing for several years, the French Indian War did not begin in earnest until 1754 when Lieutenant Colonel George Washingtons command was defeated at Fort Necessity in western Pennsylvania. The following year, a large British force led by Major General Edward Braddock was crushed at the Battle of the Monongahela attempting to avenge Washingtons defeat and capture Fort Duquesne. To the north, the British fared better as noted Indian agent Sir William Johnson led troops to victory at the Battle of Lake George in September 1755 and captured the French commander, Baron Dieskau. In the wake of this setback, the governor of New France (Canada), the Marquis de Vaudreuil, directed that Fort Carillon (Ticonderoga) be constructed at the south end of Lake Champlain. Fort William Henry In response, Johnson ordered Major William Eyre, the military engineer of the 44th Regiment of Foot, to build Fort William Henry at the southern shore of Lake George. This position was supported by Fort Edward which was located on the Hudson River approximately sixteen miles to the south. Built in a square design with bastions on the corners, Fort William Henrys walls were approximately thirty feet thick and consisted of earth faced with timber. The forts magazine was located in the northeast bastion while a medical facility was placed in the southeast bastion. As constructed, the fort was meant to hold a garrison of 400-500 men. Though formidable, the fort was intended to repel Native American attacks and was not constructed to withstand enemy artillery. While the northern wall faced the lake, the other three were protected by a dry moat. Access to the fort was provided by a bridge across this ditch. Supporting the fort was a large entrenched camp located a short distance to the southeast. Garrisoned by the men of Eyres regiment, the fort turned back a French attack, led by Pierre de Rigaud in March 1757. This was largely due to the French lacking heavy guns. British Plans As the 1757 campaign season approached, the new British commander-in-chief for North America, Lord Loudoun, submitted plans to London calling for an assault on Quebec City. The center of French operations, the citys fall would effectively cut off enemy forces to the west and south. As this plan moved forward, Loudoun intended to take a defensive posture on the frontier. He felt this would be feasible as the attack on Quebec would draw French troops away from the border. Moving forward, Loudoun began assembling the forces needed for the mission. In March 1757, he received orders from the new government of William Pitt directing him to turn his efforts towards taking the fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island. While this did not alter Loudouns preparations directly, it dramatically changed the strategic situation as the new mission would not draw French forces away from the frontier. As the operation against Louisbourg took priority, the best units were assigned accordingly. To protect the frontier, Loudoun appointed Brigadier General Daniel Webb to oversee the defenses in New York and gave him 2,000 regulars. This force was to be augmented by 5,000 colonial militia.   The French Response In New France, Vaudreuils field commander, Major General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm (Marquis de Montcalm), began planning to reduce Fort William Henry. Fresh from a victory at Fort Oswego the previous year, he had demonstrated that traditional European siege tactics could be effective against forts in North America. Montcalms intelligence network began providing him with information that suggested that the British target for 1757 would be Louisbourg. Recognizing that such an effort would leave the British weak on the frontier, he began assembling troops to strike south. This work was aided by Vaudreuil who was able to recruit around 1,800 Native American warriors to supplement Montcalms army. These were sent south to Fort Carillon.  Assembling a combined force of around 8,000 men at the fort, Montcalm began preparing to move south against Fort William Henry. Despite his best efforts, his Native American allies proved difficult to control and began mistreating and torturing British prisoners at the fort. Additionally, they routinely took more than their share of rations and were found to be ritually cannibalizing prisoners. Though Montcalm desired to end such behavior, he risked the Native Americans leaving his army if he pushed too hard. The Campaign Begins At Fort William Henry, command passed to Lieutenant Colonel George Monro of the 35th Foot in the spring of 1757. Establishing his headquarters in the fortified camp, Monro had around 1,500 men at his disposal. He was supported by Webb, who was at Fort Edward. Alerted to the French build up, Monro dispatched a force up the lake which was routed at the Battle of Sabbath Day Point on July 23. In response, Webb traveled to Fort William Henry with a detachment of Connecticut rangers led by Major Israel Putnam. Scouting north, Putnam reported the approach of a Native American force. Returning to Fort Edward, Webb directed 200 regulars and 800 Massachusetts militiamen to reinforce Monros garrison. Though this increased the garrison to around 2,500 men, several hundred were ill with smallpox. On July 30, Montcalm ordered Franà §ois de Gaston, Chevalier de Là ©vis to move south with an advance force. Following the next day, he rejoined Là ©vis at Ganaouske Bay. Again pushing ahead, Là ©vis camped within three miles of Fort William Henry on August 1. Armies Commanders British Lieutenant Colonel George Monro2,500 men French Native Americans Marquis de Montcalmapprox. 8,000 men The French Attack Two days later, Là ©vis moved south of the fort and severed the road to Fort Edward. Skirmishing with Massachusetts militia, they were able to maintain the blockade. Arriving later in the day, Montcalm demanded Monros surrender. This request was rebuffed and Monro sent messengers south to Fort Edward to seek aid from Webb. Assessing the situation and lacking sufficient men to both aid Monro and cover the colonial capital of Albany, Webb responded on August 4 by telling him to seek the best surrender terms possible if forced to capitulate. Intercepted by Montcalm, the message informed the French commander that no aid would be coming and that Monro was isolated. As Webb was writing, Montcalm directed Colonel Franà §ois-Charles de Bourlamaque to commence siege operations. Digging trenches northwest of the fort, Bourlamaque began emplacing guns to reduce the northwest bastion of the fort. Completed on August 5, the first battery opened fire and battered the forts walls from a range of about 2,000 yards. A second battery was finished the next day and brought the bastion under crossfire. Though Fort William Henrys guns responded, their fire proved relatively ineffective. In addition, the defense was hampered by a large portion of the garrison being ill. Hammering the walls through the night of August 6/7, the French succeeded in opening several gaps. On August 7, Montcalm dispatched his aide, Louis Antoine de Bougainville, to again call for the forts surrender. This was again refused. After enduring another day and nights bombardment and with the forts defenses collapsing and the French trenches coming closer, Monro hoisted a white flag on August 9 to open surrender negotiations. Surrender Massacre Meeting, the commanders formalized the surrender and Montcalm granted Monros garrison terms which allowed them to keep their muskets and one cannon, but no ammunition. In addition, they were to be escorted to Fort Edward and were prohibited from fighting for eighteen months. Finally, the British were to release the French prisoners in their custody. Housing the British garrison in the entrenched camp, Montcalm endeavored to explain the terms to his Native American allies. This proved difficult due to a large number of languages used by the Native Americans. As the day passed, the Native Americans looted the fort and killed many of the British wounded which had been left within its walls for treatment. Increasingly unable to control the Native Americans, who were eager for plunder and scalps, Montcalm and Monro decided to attempt to move the garrison south that night. This plan failed when the Native Americans became aware of the British movement. Waiting until dawn on August 10, the column, which included women and children, formed and was provided with a 200-man escort by Montcalm. With the Native Americans hovering, the column began moving towards the military road south. As it exited the camp, the Native Americans entered and killed seventeen wounded soldiers that had been left behind. They next fell upon the rear of the column which largely consisted of the militia. A halt was called and an attempt was made to restore order but to no avail. While some French officers attempted to halt the Native Americans, others stepped aside. With Native American attacks increasing in intensity, the column began to dissolve as many of the British soldiers fled into the woods. Aftermath Pushing on, Monro reached Fort Edward with around 500 people. By the end of the month, 1,783 of the forts 2,308-man garrison (on August 9) had arrived at Fort Edward with many making their own way through the woods. In the course of the fighting for Fort William Henry, the British sustained around 130 casualties. Recent estimates place losses during the massacre of August 10 at 69 to 184 killed. Following the British departure, Montcalm ordered Fort William Henry dismantled and destroyed. Lacking sufficient supplies and equipment for pushing on to Fort Edward, and with his Native American allies leaving, Montcalm elected to withdraw back to Fort Carillon. The fighting at Fort William Henry gained increased attention in 1826 when James Fenimore Cooper published his novel Last of the Mohicans. In the wake of the forts loss, Webb was removed for his lack of action. With the failure of the Louisbourg expedition, Loudoun was relieved as well and replaced by Major General James Abercrombie. Returning to the site of Fort William Henry the following year, Abercrombie conducted an ill-fated campaign that ended with his defeat at the Battle of Carillon in July 1758. The French would finally be forced from the area the in 1759 when Major General Jeffery Amherst pushed north.

His ramblings of a drunken brawl with two men in which he loses and ends up paying them money for, establishes Johnny as a narrator with little to no credibility. In chapter five, Johnny recounts the story in which he encounters a young girl who is a local stripper, who Johnny refers to as â€Å"Thumper†. Thumper is described as somebody who is irresponsibly risquà ©, and even shameful in her morals and beliefs which she attributes in the life she lives, amid drugs, random sexual encounters, and other behaviors that the common person would deem â€Å"unstable†. Thumper is shown to be the opposite of â€Å"stable† as she embodies all of Johnny’s lifestyle choices, making her an unreliable narrator with little to no moral value. Even though she is an unreliable narrator, her consistency in Johnny’s life is greater than that of other characters. Lude is an enabler to Johnny’s behavior, as he only condemns his actions on a few occasions. Lude never cuts contact off with Johnny in attempt to be at his side to help him, yet there is never any clear attempt on the part of Lude to try and get professional help for Johnny. During Johnny’s obsession with Zampano’s novels, he shouts at a customer abruptly causing Thumper to scold him, and warns him about his inappropriate behavior. It eventually leads to thumper to be prompted to fire him, and telling him he needs to seek professional help. This is the first time in which somebody disciplines Johnny for his behavior. Thumper is the first person in Johnny’s life to ever hold him accountable for his actions. This transaction between Johnny and Thumper can be compared to a a mother kicking her child

International trade is the import and export of goods and services across the boundaries all over the globe. The goods and services entering the country for the purpose of sale are known as imports while the goods and services that leave a country for sale are known as exports. One of the fundamental concepts that underlie the global trade is the comparative advantage that was developed by David Ricardo in the 19th century. Absolute advantage and comparative advantage are the two concepts that are used in the international trade or Global trade. But, there is a lot of difference between absolute advantage and comparative advantage. Absolute advantage: Absolute advantage is that which compares the productivity of the different economies or producers. A producer is said to have an absolute advantage if that producer requires smaller quantity inputs for producing a good. The figure below explains the amount of output produced by country A and country B in a given period of time. As seen in the below figure country A uses less time as compared to country B for making either the clothing or the food. It can be seen that 6 units of food are made by country A and only one unit is made by country B. In other words it can be said that Country A has an absolute advantage over country B in making both the clothing and the food.
